Ride program: 3 Saturday mornings. (One time S$100 payable upon registration at the store for guests of MBS Tuneup card holders who need a folding bike to join the rides on these Saturdays). 20-25 km speeds. Distances start at 20km and we aim for 40km distance on the last ride.
Who is suitable? For men and women who like to start doing some levels of aerobic/anaerobic exercise where you have short bursts of hard pedaling on Park Connectors. Ideally, we like our participants have a Heart Rate monitor to establish that you are working in the right zone: (220-your age) x 80%. Eg if you are 50, you should be seeing your Heart Rate not exceed 133.
Guest Fees cover: 1xCairbull Savat (S$49) (it’s yours to keep after the ride for hygiene purpose) Use of a store demo foldable bike for 3 sessions. Max 3 for loan per group.
Goal 1) Get active outdoors for 3 hrs on Sat mornings 2) Explore the PCN at comfortable 20-25 km/hr 3) Commit to complete 75km over 3 Saturdays 4) Start from MBS @Henderson at 8am. We push off at 815am
FAQs
If I have my own helmet, is there any refund for the helmet?
Ans: No – we have designed this for those new to cycling and we would feel safer if you had a helmet that was certified and properly fitted. When you register and come down to pay, we will hand you your helmet.
Will I get any refunds if I stop after the first ride?
Ans: No, the fees cover the helmet cost, use of the bike in use on these 3 rides.
If I do not complete the 3 rides, can I join the next group?
Ans: The design of these rides will provide you with the opportunity to discover the Park Connector Networks and the joy of cycling. You are encouraged to continue to keep riding but the designated bikes are for registered participants for that particular batch. We will try our best to accommodate your participation if you miss a scheduled ride.
What if weather is bad, does cancellation mean the ride count is forfeited?
Ans: No, we will count that ride as cancelled and we will “credit” that batch with 1 more ride.
If you are unwell or away, do we get credit for that missed ride?
Ans: No, we do not refund for such situations.
I have my own folding bike but not purchased from MBS stores, can I join?
Ans: No, these rides and events are organised for MBS bike owners.

Streamlined Safe Distancing measures from the 29 Mar allows 10 pax per group but 1m distancing to be observed. We will be observing crowd control and queue management to avoid overcrowding. Masks to be worn when indoors and optional for outdoor demo ride testing.

Scooting can increase core strength
How often do we find time in our daily routines for the planks and sit-ups that aid core strength? Scooting is excellent news for core strength, as you balance a scooter you engage your bum. The need for stabilising whilst standing on a scooter places a positive demand on muscles that we all too often take for granted. In particular, having a good foundation of the muscles around the stomach, back and pelvis, can protect against back problems that affects as many as half of us in adulthood.
Aerobic and anaerobic fitness systems get a look in
Scooting on the flat provides an opportunity for gentle aerobic exercise by elevating the heart rate. On even ground, you’ll spend the majority of your scoot-time in the aerobic ‘fat burn zone’, but you’re never far away from an anaerobic challenge, especially if you live near any steep inclines. The moment you hit a hill on a scooter is where anaerobic capacity comes in – hills will challenge you more than on a bike. By challenging yourself in bursts and then giving yourself a break, you’ll give yourself a high intensity interval training (HIIT) session, which is known for greater post-workout benefits including elevated metabolism, for longer fat-burning effects. Scooting up hill also means one thing – there will be a down hill!
Say hello to your new bum and thighs
We’d forgive you for thinking that it’s only the kicking leg that get you a workout on a kick scooter. Whilst it’s true that propelling yourself along by pushing off the ground provides a powerful workout, it’s your supporting thigh and glute muscles do the majority of the stabilising work. If you want to go that little bit further for a really good conditioning session, think about engaging your bum whilst in action, and ‘squeezing’ the glute on the kicking leg. Don’t be surprised if your glutes and quads ache for a few days after scooting for the first time, and always remember to swap legs for an even work out!
Challenge your stability (even more so for ladies after pregnancy)
Overall stability from top to toe is so important for everyday activities. When we talk about stability we’re referring particularly to even strength in the abdominal muscles and pelvic floor, the areas that gets stretched and weakened in pregnancy. It’s important to get those muscles working again for your long term physical well being, and especially so if you enjoy high impact sports like running, where any imbalances are accentuated and can lead to injury.
We all have a stronger and weaker side, yet don’t often have a chance to discover which is which. Scooting can improve your stability as the neurological messaging between your brain and muscles improves when challenged. It’s really important to use alternate legs for an even work out. Try 3 kicks with the left, swap and 3 kicks with the right, once you get into the rhythm, any imbalances should even out as you feel your core muscles engaging. Exercise: If you aren’t sure which is your weaker side, stand on one leg and bend your knee, then straighten it again keeping as still as possible. One side will feel more stable than the other. For a real test — do this with your eyes shut! Use this awareness in your training.

It’s joie de vivre for all ! It’s hard to resist a smile on a family scoot, and that’s good for the heart and the mind. What’s more, getting involved in an activity that your children already love enables more family ‘togetherness’ time. There aren’t many activities that us grown-ups and young children can share, equally enjoy and you’ll feel the benefits too.
Folding bikes makes the most sense when it comes to multi modal commuting and especially when it comes to storage when not in use. We have come such a long way when Singapore is aiming towards a lower carbon footprint and infrastructure must help to encourage use of non motorised devices.

As a radical design, the Moulton bicycle – the first small-wheeled adult bicycle – needed credibility in the market and Alex Moulton realised the importance of this when planning the launch of the bicycle in 1962.
